Tokens linked to the Trump family are sliding sharply while Bitcoin and Ether climb, after Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections.
The official TRUMP memecoin drops 17% over 24 hours to trade near $1.33, making it the biggest loser among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market value on Wednesday.
World Liberty Financial’s WLFI governance token also lands in the red, shedding more than 7% to change hands around $0.047, according to CoinMarketCap data from late afternoon UTC.
The contrast with the wider market is stark. Bitcoin gains more than 4% and Ether rises roughly 6% over the same window as broader risk appetite returns.
The political token segment tells a different story. Trump-themed memecoins collectively lose more than 16% of their value in a day, leaving the sector’s combined market capitalization near $477 million.
MELANIA, the memecoin associated with the First Lady, falls close to 13%, confirming that the selloff reaches well beyond the two headline tokens.
The weakness begins on election night. As results start pointing to Republican losses, WLFI slips 10% and touches a fresh all-time low before the full outcome is known.
TRUMP falls about 8% and MELANIA around 11% in that early move, showing traders reacting to the political signal well before the results are final.
Traders are not simply reacting to a change in party control. They are pricing in the prospect of a Congress far less friendly to the Trump family’s crypto interests.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee are already signalling plans to open investigations into the family’s digital asset ventures once the new majority takes its seats.
That risk weighs heavily on tokens whose appeal rests largely on political association and public attention rather than on conventional utility or revenue.
World Liberty Financial is the family-backed decentralized finance platform launched in 2024. It issues the WLFI governance token alongside a dollar-linked stablecoin.
The TRUMP memecoin arrives in January 2025, just ahead of the president’s second inauguration, and quickly becomes one of the most closely watched politically themed tokens in the market.
Both assets already carry heavy losses before this week. WLFI trades far below the peak it reached after its debut, and earlier lows this year drew intense scrutiny.
Political pressure around the project has been building for months. Earlier disclosures showed the president earning more than $580 million from World Liberty Financial, which lists his sons as co-founders.
Ahead of the vote, Tron founder Justin Sun also filed a sanctions request targeting World Liberty, adding another legal storyline for token holders to follow.
The market backdrop is otherwise constructive. Bitcoin and Ether both rally as uncertainty around the election fades, even though Democratic control raises questions about future crypto legislation.
Industry experts warn the Clarity Act is unlikely to survive in its current form, with incoming majorities expected to demand tighter oversight of crypto markets and tokenized stocks.
For now, the tension plays out unevenly. Large assets benefit from relief that the vote is over, while politically branded tokens absorb the downside of a shifting power structure.
Traders will watch whether the selloff extends once congressional committees publish their agendas, and whether any formal inquiry touches World Liberty Financial or the memecoins directly.
Liquidity is another factor. Thin markets in smaller tokens tend to magnify moves in both directions, so further sharp swings remain possible as positioning resets.
Nothing in the data points to a lasting verdict yet. Prices stay volatile, and any statement from the Trump family or from lawmakers could shift sentiment quickly.
